His excellency Eduard W. M. V. Hoeks, ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands joined over 30 members of RCPI at our regular meeting at the Barcelo Hotel. The Ambassador gave a fascinating account of his work at diplomatic postings at the Embassies of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi, Sofia, Moscow, Dhaka, Algiers, Ouagadougou and Jakarta. His insights and observations of culture and behaviour held the attention of the members as he continued to expand on the changing role of the Diplomat in a world where, when he started his work, a physical diplomatic bag arrived once a week by plane and has now been replaced by electronic communication where distance is no longer a barrier. He observed that new topics had joined the agenda of the Diplomat including Migration, Climate Change, Energy, Cyber Crime and latterly Ebola.

The club thanked Ambassador Hoeks for his not only informative but also highly entertaining speech.
